Sarnoff's Featured Artist of the Month - Deanna Thibault

Deanna's Personal Statement

My work ranges from impressionism to abstraction. It is always full of design, color and pattern. Many of my paintings begin with black ink line using a technique called blind contour drawing. In this technique, you look only at the objects as you draw, not at the paper, letting your eye move along shapes and edges in the objects, letting your hand follow your eye as you draw. This technique often creates whimsical shapes. Working very spontaneously, to these shapes I add fresh, bold color, pattern and texture using watercolor and acrylic paints, and then apply hand-painted collage papers for additional pattern and color. As a result of this process, many people describe my work as having great black and white graphics with color and design that sizzles!

Recently, with the help of the staff at Sarnoff's Art & Writing in Tucson, I've developed a new process that allows me to frame my canvas and paper-based work without glass or plastic glazing. This process essentially seals each layer of my work — painting, mat and backing — with several layers of clear acrylic gel medium. When dry, these layers are assembled into a "sandwich" using a heat mounting process. The finished piece permanently fuses backing, mat and painting, and imparts an interesting non-reflective texture that is also protective. These works are then framed without glazing; in the case of works on gallery-wrapped canvas, they are ready to hang.

Why I Shop at Sarnoff

For years I have developed a relationship with Henry and the staff there, they helped me develop what I do in my finished art today, and how my work is presented in my t-bo mount.  They work hard to deliver what the artist needs, get supplies that are not in the store and to wait on you with kindness and respect.  A few years ago I started working with Henry to connect with more of the artist and guilds, and to work with a stronger demonstration program.  I also have helped with his demo's at his sale weekends the Expos. I learn alot at these and share with many other artist, it has been a great reward for me to learn and share about how to use many New Products in the ART WORLD.
